The theme of UAUS’s 8th exhibition [Seoul Marke-t 21] is “Market”, a term it employs to reflect the city of 'Seoul' culture as well as denoting it as a platform where people interact with each other. This exhibition showcases 21 architectural pavilions in the Ttukseom Park.
The 21 architectural pavilions are the result of architecture students reinterpreting their social, cultural and economic activities in the market into architectural designs. The different zones, which have different characteristics include hobbies, lifestyles, fashion and food; and they all come together to create a new urban marketplace in Ttukseom.
"We designed a market in a collective city that contains a society, its culture and its economy, which creates a platform to have various events within the exhibition."
<Marke-t21> gives focus to the markets in Seoul, which are a matrix of collective activity within the city. UAUS therefore created new cultural events, pavilions and shelters with flexible purposes and programmes employing ‘sustainable design’ by combining architecture and design with the culture of the market as the identity of city.
"A market is the smallest unit that arouses exchanges in the city."
What basic unit contains the social, economic and cultural identity of a place? What is the smallest unit where people gather and engage in diverse exchanges? It is the market. The market used to be the hub of the city which contained all of these urban elements.
Before the city became huge and complex, there was a community of relatively small units called “markets”. People gathered in one place to discuss all manner of issues, enjoy communication and trade goods. The market was a place where all the elements of society, economy and culture came together.
As such, UAUS is re-examining the 'current' market, which does not contain social and cultural elements, as a place rich in economic, social and cultural meaning through architecture and design. UAUS therefore proposes a blueprint of a market through sustainable design that includes the social, economic and cultural identity of the place.
UAUS
The Union of Architecture University Students (UAUS) is the nation's largest university student association with a network of 6,300 architectural students from 21 universities. UAUS aims to popularize the study of architecture as well as encouraging communication amongst its members in order to foster an understanding and awareness of their social responsibilities as architecture students.
